The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Preschool science and technology with literature activity (participants Anna, 2 years old; Neela, 3 years old; Vidheha and Anika 4 years old; Amulya and Bishesh 5 years old; Arrambha and Snigdha 6 years old)

A glass bowl with caterpillars and cocoons!

Eggs that turn into tiny caterpillars.

Tiny caterpillars that eat and eat and eat and get biiiiiiig.

They make cocoons.

And turn into huge beautiful butterflies and moths like the one before us.

How did we learn about this? We saw the real thing they way we do things
at school and we read a really fun book: “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”
by Eric Carle.

A caterpillar hatched out of an egg and ate a lot of food.
1 apple, 2 pears, 3 plums, 4 strawberries, and 5 oranges
but he was still hungry. The he ate a chocolate cake,
ice cream, pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, lollipop,
cherry pie, sausage, cupcake and watermelon.

Then he had a stomach-ache. Then he ate a green
leaf and felt better. We must eat vegetables!

Then the caterpillar made a cocoon and in two weeks
he came out as a beautiful butterfly.

We played hide and seek looking for real caterpillars
in our bowl that is called the “ecosystem” and said
that these are our very hungry caterpillars who will
turn into moths or butterflies. There were also
cocoons already in our ecosystem. Maybe they will
turn into huge yellow moths that we studied for real.
